Seven Down in Greenland: An Air Rescue Disaster

A forced landing on Greenland’s ice cap set in motion one of the most extensive—and costly—search-and-rescue operations ever mounted. It was called the Snowball Route—officially the North Atlantic Ferry Route—from Goose Bay, Labrador, to the one-way runway at Bluie West One on Greenland; then across to Keflavik, Iceland, to refuel again; on to Prestwick, Scotland; and finally toGet price

While the entire crew was safely evacuated after spending three days in the isolated Arctic tundra, the aircraft itself was left at the landing site. It lay there undisturbed until 1994, when a privately funded mission was launchedGet price

Whatever Sea Level Rise Brings, NASA Will Be There – Climate

NASA Sees The SeasMelting Here, Flooding ThereDisaster ResponseThanks to altimetry missions, beginning with the U.S.-French TOPEX / Poseidon mission launched in 1992 and continuing through the present with the Jason series, we now have a nearly three-decade-long recordof sea level change. Similarly, because of missions like the U.S.-German Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) and its successor, GRACE Follow-On, we know a lot more about what the ice is doing than we used to, especially at the poles. For instance, we know that Greenland lost 600 billion tons of ice last summer alone. Thatenough to raise global sea levels by a tenth of an inch (2.2 millimeters). We also know that both Greenland and Antarctica are losing ice six times fasterthan they were in the 1990s. These numbers matter because frozen within all of the glaciers and ice sheets is enough water to raise global sea levels by more than 195 feet (60 meters)—key word here being "global." Ice that melts in Greenland and Antarctica, for example, increases the volume of wate...Get price

Atlantic Salmon (Protected) | NOAA Fisheries

Life cycleConservationAppearanceBehaviorDietDistributionReproductionBreedingEffectsManagementSummaryAtlantic salmon, also known as the King of Fish, are anadromous, which means they can live in both fresh and saltwater. Atlantic salmon have a relatively complex life history that begins with spawning and juvenile rearing in rivers. They then migrate to saltwater to feed, grow, and mature before returning to freshwater to spawn. Atlantic salmon have a complex life history and go through several stages that affect their behavior, appearance, and habitat needs. They are anadromous, which means that they are born in freshwater, migrate to the ocean as adults, and then return upriver to spawn. When spawning in the fall, the female salmon uses its tail to dig nests in the gravel where the eggs are deposited. These nests are called redds. Over winter, the eggs develop into very small salmon called alevin. In the spring, the alevin swim out of the redd and are then called fry. Fry grow into parr, which are only 2 inches long and are camouflaged to protect them from predators. For 2 to 3 years, the parr grow in freshwater before transforming into smolts in the early spring. The silvery smolts gills and organs change, allowing them to swim to the ocean where they spend 1 to 2 years maturing into adults.Get price
